The third category for the 2021 MG Summer Reading BINGO is…THIS IS ME. The five books that I chose were:
- Taking Up Space by Alyson Gerber (May 18/21)
- Red, White, and Whole by Rajana LaRocca (Feb 2/21)
- The Chance to Fly by Ali Stroker and Stacy Davidowitz (Apr 13/21)
- Starfish by Lisa Fipps (Mar 9/21)
- Real by Carol Cujec and Peyton Goddard (Feb 2/21)
The five titles in this category have main characters who struggle with acceptance or understanding from others about their true selves. They are also written or co-written by authors who have lived these experiences and have important insight to share with young readers through these characters. Sarah’s passion is basketball, but her changing body and mixed messages about food result in her adopting habits that hurt her performance on the court until she communicates what she needs. Reha feels like she is an Indian girl at home and an American girl at school and needs to overcome her family’s expectations to embrace both aspects of herself. Nat adores musical theatre, but her parents are initially resistant to letting her try out for the local play because of the challenges she’ll face being in a wheelchair. Ellie faces judgment from her friends and family because of her size until she starts seeing a therapist who helps her teach others to accept her for who she is. Charity is unable to communicate her inner world until she’s taught supported typing, and she can finally help those around her understand what she needs. Each of these characters learns they are valuable as they are and has to help family and friends support them to be their awesome selves.
I’ll reveal the fourth category next Wednesday, followed by the complete BINGO next Friday. I can’t wait to share my other selection with you.
